Building a Garden Pond

build3

The Builders-type barrow is clearly visible in this photograph. Also, note the step cut in to the earth to aid getting in and out of the digging area. This will be removed at the last moment. All the digging was carried out manually in order to save money. It may take longer but it guarantees that you will keep fit!!

When you have dug out to the required depth including the thickness of the pool base, check that the bottom is level using a spirit level laid on top of a long straight piece of timber.

Now, before doing anything else, measure and then check squareness of the dug out area. Then RECHECK all your dug out dimensions (i.e. finished pond length + thickness of concrete blocks + an allowance for working, finished pond width + thickness of concrete blocks + an allowance for working, finished pond depth + thickness of base concrete) and if this appears ok, get your partner or a friend to Double Check your figures to make absolutely sure. It is much easier to correct any error NOW before you start mixing and pouring Concrete.
